Filter Issues? We Have the Fix.

Pool Duck diagnoses and repairs all types of pool filter problems restoring proper filtration, water clarity, and system performance.
Beautiful Lakeside Pool

When your filter is not working properly, every other aspect of pool maintenance becomes more difficult. Cloudy water, algae resistance, and poor equipment performance often trace back to a filtration problem. Addressing it quickly and correctly makes the difference between a clean pool and a recurring problem.

Pool Duck’s technicians are experienced with all filter types and the specific failure modes that affect each one. We diagnose accurately, recommend the right repair, and restore your filter to proper operating condition.

Pool Filter Problems We Repair

  • High pressure issues indicating dirty or damaged media
  • Low pressure indicating a flow restriction or air leak
  • Cloudy water that persists despite clean media
  • Cracked or damaged filter housing
  • Failed or worn O-rings, gaskets, and lid seals
  • Broken or collapsed cartridge or DE grid elements
  • Multiport valve failure: spider gasket, valve body, or handle
  • Sand filter channeling requiring media replacement

Filter Types We Service

  • Cartridge filters: element inspection, cleaning, or replacement
  • Diatomaceous earth (DE) filters: grid inspection, repair, and DE replenishment
  • Sand filters: media assessment, backwash verification, and sand replacement

When Repair Is Right and When Replacement Makes More Sense

Many filter repairs are straightforward: a new O-ring, a replacement cartridge element, or a multiport valve rebuild. When the housing itself is structurally compromised or the filter has reached the end of its useful service life, replacement is often the smarter investment. We give you a clear, honest recommendation either way.

Pool Filter Repair by Pool Duck

Your pool filter is working every hour that your pump is running, continuously processing water and removing the particles and contaminants that keep your pool looking and feeling clean. When the filter develops a problem, the effects show up in your water quality, your pump’s operating pressure, and your overall system performance. Sometimes the signs are obvious: water that will not clear, a pressure gauge that reads far above normal, or a filter that is leaking. Other times they are subtler: gradually declining clarity, a pump that seems to be working harder than usual, or chemistry that seems off despite correct readings.

Pool Duck’s technicians are experienced with all three residential filter types and the specific failure patterns that affect each one. We diagnose accurately, explain what we find clearly, and repair what needs repairing without recommending work that is not necessary. When your filter is the problem, Pool Duck is the solution.

Understanding Your Pool Filter Type

Florida residential pools use three types of filtration systems, each with its own operating principles, maintenance requirements, and characteristic failure modes. Knowing which type you have is the starting point for understanding any filter problem.

Cartridge filters are the most common type in Florida residential pools. Water passes through pleated polyester cartridge elements that trap particles in the 10 to 15 micron range. They require no backwashing, operate at lower pressure than other filter types, and are relatively simple mechanically. Their primary failure modes involve cartridge element wear, cracked or leaking housing components, and O-ring or gasket failures at the lid and fittings.

Diatomaceous earth filters, commonly called DE filters, use a fine powder coating applied to internal grid elements to achieve filtration down to 3 to 5 microns, the finest available for residential pools. They require periodic backwashing with DE replenishment and full grid cleaning on a regular schedule. Failure modes include torn or collapsed grid elements, spider gasket failure in the multiport valve, and housing cracks from pressure events.

Sand filters push water through a bed of specially graded filter sand, trapping particles in the 20 to 40 micron range. They require regular backwashing and periodic sand replacement as the media rounds off and loses filtration efficiency over time. Failure modes include channeling in the sand bed, lateral cracking that allows sand to pass into the pool, and multiport valve component failures.

Pool Filter Problems Pool Duck Diagnoses and Repairs

  • High filter pressure: dirty media is the most common cause, but cracked or collapsed internal elements that restrict flow, closed or partially closed valves, and certain pump configurations can also drive pressure higher than normal
  • Low filter pressure: air leaks on the suction side of the pump, flow restrictions before the filter, or a pump that is underperforming can all present as low pressure at the filter gauge
  • Filter leaking water: O-ring and gasket failures at the lid, tank body seam cracks, and fitting connection failures are the most common sources of external filter leaks
  • DE or sand returning to the pool: torn DE grid elements allow DE powder to pass through and return to the pool, while cracked laterals in a sand filter allow sand to enter the return lines
  • Multiport valve problems: spider gasket failure in DE and sand filter multiport valves causes water to bypass the filter or flow to waste when the valve is in filter position, and worn valve body seals reduce efficiency
  • Water clarity that does not improve despite clean media: channeling in a sand filter, media that has lost its filtration capacity and needs replacement, or a filter that is undersized for the pool’s volume can all produce persistent clarity problems that cleaning alone does not resolve

The Pool Duck Filter Repair Process

Pool Duck approaches filter repair with the same methodical assessment that we apply to all equipment diagnostics. We begin by reviewing the symptoms and the filter’s service history, then conduct a hands-on inspection of the system. For cartridge and DE filters, this typically involves opening the filter tank, inspecting the internal elements and housing, and testing the lid seal and fitting connections. For sand filters, we inspect the multiport valve, check for sand returns, and assess the tank connections and laterals.

We provide a clear diagnosis with specific findings before recommending any repair. If the issue is a straightforward O-ring replacement or cartridge element swap, we carry common components and can often complete the repair during the initial visit. If the issue involves a less common part, a cracked housing, or a more complex internal failure, we will quote the repair accurately and schedule the follow-up work promptly.

When Repair Is Right and When Replacement Makes More Sense

Pool Duck always evaluates the repair option honestly against the replacement option. Many filter repairs are straightforward and cost-effective: a new multiport valve spider gasket, a replacement cartridge element, or a lid O-ring restore the filter to full function at a fraction of the cost of a new unit. These repairs make clear economic sense and Pool Duck performs them efficiently.

Replacement becomes the better recommendation when the filter housing itself is structurally compromised, when the filter is significantly undersized for the pool’s current setup, when repair costs approach the cost of a new equivalent unit, or when the filter has reached an age where ongoing reliability is uncertain. Pool Duck will always give you a clear comparison of repair cost versus replacement cost, with an honest assessment of which path delivers better long-term value for your specific situation.

The Connection Between Filter Health and Water Quality

Pool owners sometimes invest heavily in water chemistry management while overlooking the filtration system, then wonder why their water quality is inconsistent despite correct chemical readings. Chemistry and filtration are partners in pool water management, and neither works at its best without the other performing correctly.

A filter that is performing below capacity allows fine particles to remain suspended in the water, creating haze and cloudiness that chemicals cannot resolve. Dead algae from a treatment cannot be cleared if the filter is not running efficiently. Oils and fine debris that accumulate because the filter cannot capture them create chlorine demand that makes maintaining sanitizer levels harder. Every dollar spent on chemicals is stretched further by a filtration system that is working correctly. Pool Duck keeps both sides of that equation in order.

Filter Pressure Readings: Understanding What Normal Looks Like

Every pool filter has a pressure gauge that displays the operating pressure of the system in pounds per square inch. Understanding what your filter’s normal operating pressure is, and what changes in that reading mean, is one of the most useful things a pool owner can learn. The correct clean starting pressure varies between filter types and sizes, but the general principle is consistent: pressure that rises above the clean operating baseline by 8 to 10 PSI indicates the filter needs cleaning, while pressure that is significantly lower than normal often indicates an airlock, a suction-side restriction, or a pump that is underperforming. Pool Duck documents your filter’s clean operating pressure during service visits so that any meaningful change from that baseline is immediately identifiable as a sign requiring investigation.
