The First Line of Defense: Why…
It may seem like a simple housekeeping task, but emptying your pool’s…
It’s Time To Experience the Pool Duck Difference
Saltwater pools have become the preferred choice for homeowners across Florida, and for good reason. A properly operating salt system produces chlorine continuously through electrolysis, maintaining consistent sanitizer levels with far less manual dosing. The result is water that feels noticeably softer on skin and eyes and a system that requires less hands-on chemical management.
Pool Duck works with all major salt system brands and handles everything from new salt cell installation to ongoing service and troubleshooting. If you are curious about converting to saltwater or need help with an existing system, we have you covered.

A salt chlorine generator (SCG) uses a small amount of dissolved salt, roughly the same concentration as a teardrop, and passes it through a titanium cell that uses low-voltage electricity to convert the salt into free chlorine. That chlorine sanitizes the water and then converts back to salt to be processed again. The cycle is continuous, meaning your pool maintains a consistent chlorine level without the spikes and drops associated with manual dosing.
A common misconception is that saltwater pools are self-maintaining. They still require regular water chemistry management, particularly pH, alkalinity, calcium hardness, and cyanuric acid, because the salt cell only handles chlorine generation. Imbalanced water chemistry will degrade your salt cell, damage pool surfaces, and compromise water quality. Our weekly service includes full chemistry management for saltwater pools.
Pool Duck provides professional, full-service pool care designed to keep your pool clean, balanced, and running efficiently week after week.

Saltwater pools have become the preferred choice for Florida homeowners, and the reasons are straightforward. Water that is sanitized by a salt chlorine generator feels noticeably softer and gentler on skin and eyes than water maintained with traditional chlorine additions. The chemical smell that people associate with pools, which is actually caused by chloramines rather than chlorine itself, is significantly reduced. And the day-to-day management of chlorine levels becomes more stable and predictable because the system produces sanitizer continuously rather than in spikes.
Pool Duck installs new salt systems, services and maintains existing ones, troubleshoots performance problems, and handles cell replacements when the time comes. Whether you are converting a traditional chlorine pool to saltwater or need expert care for the salt system you already have, Pool Duck has the experience and the equipment knowledge to handle it correctly.
Every Pool Duck weekly service visit follows a comprehensive checklist that covers every aspect of your pool’s health. We do not cut corners, skip steps when time is short, or treat any visit as less important than the one before. Here is exactly what our technicians handle on each visit:
That post-service report is something our customers consistently mention as one of the things they value most about Pool Duck. You will always know what was done, what your water readings looked like, and whether there is anything that needs attention. No guessing. No wondering whether the tech actually showed up. Complete transparency on every single visit.
A salt chlorine generator operates through a process called electrolysis. A small amount of sodium chloride is dissolved in the pool water, typically at a concentration of around 3,000 to 3,500 parts per million. That salt concentration is far below what would be detectable as a taste, roughly one-tenth the salinity of the ocean and similar to the salt content of a teardrop.
As pool water passes through the salt cell, a low-voltage electrical current is applied to titanium plates coated with a rare-earth element called ruthenium oxide. This current causes the dissolved salt to break down into its component elements, including free chlorine in the form of hypochlorous acid. That hypochlorous acid sanitizes the pool water and then converts back to sodium chloride as it is consumed, where it is available to be processed again by the cell. The cycle is continuous, which is what makes salt systems so effective at maintaining consistent chlorine levels.
The output level of a salt cell is adjustable, allowing the system to produce more or less chlorine depending on your pool’s demand. During periods of heavy use, high heat, or post-storm recovery, the output can be increased. During cooler months when chlorine consumption drops, it can be reduced. This adjustability is one of the practical advantages of salt systems over manual chlorine dosing.
The single most common misconception about saltwater pools is that they are self-maintaining. This misunderstanding leads to more neglect-related pool problems than perhaps any other false belief in residential pool ownership. A saltwater pool still requires every aspect of regular water chemistry management that a traditionally chlorinated pool requires. The salt system only handles one variable: chlorine generation. Everything else still needs professional attention.
pH management is actually more demanding in a saltwater pool than in a traditional chlorine pool. The electrolysis process that generates chlorine also produces sodium hydroxide as a byproduct, which raises pH. Left unmanaged, this drives pH steadily upward, reducing chlorine effectiveness and accelerating scale formation on the cell plates and pool surfaces. Saltwater pool owners who neglect pH management often find their cell scaling up rapidly and their water quality declining despite the fact that the chlorine reading looks acceptable.
Total alkalinity, calcium hardness, and cyanuric acid all require the same monitoring and adjustment in a saltwater pool as in any other pool. Calcium that is too high accelerates cell scaling. Calcium that is too low creates corrosive water that attacks the cell, the pool surface, and any metal components in the system. Cyanuric acid that climbs too high suppresses the effectiveness of the chlorine your cell is working to produce.
Pool Duck’s weekly service for saltwater pools covers all of these parameters with the same thoroughness we apply to every pool in our care. We also specifically monitor salt cell performance as part of our regular equipment checks, catching output degradation early before it affects water quality.
Converting an existing pool from traditional chlorination to a saltwater system is one of the most common equipment upgrades Pool Duck performs. The process involves selecting and installing the right salt cell and control unit for your pool’s volume, adding the appropriate amount of salt to establish the correct operating concentration, adjusting your water chemistry for the saltwater environment, and programming the system for your pool’s specific conditions.
Most existing pools can be converted without any significant plumbing changes. The salt cell is installed inline on your return plumbing between the filter and the pool, and the control unit mounts on or near your equipment pad. Pool Duck handles every aspect of the installation and commissioning, including owner training on how to monitor and interpret your system’s display and how to respond to the most common alerts and indicators.
The salt cell is the core of your chlorine generation system, and it requires regular professional maintenance to continue performing at its rated output. Over time, calcium and other minerals in the pool water deposit on the titanium plates inside the cell, forming a white, crusty scale that insulates the plates and reduces the electrical efficiency of the electrolysis process. A cell operating at reduced efficiency produces less chlorine than your pool needs, which leads to sanitizer deficiency that is often mistakenly blamed on the salt level or the control settings.
Pool Duck recommends a professional salt cell inspection and cleaning every three months as part of your ongoing pool service plan. During this service, we remove the cell, inspect the plates visually, perform an acid cleaning to dissolve calcium scale when present, and reinstall the cell with the connections verified. We also record the salt reading, the actual chlorine output, and the operating hours on the cell so we can track its health over time and give you advance notice when replacement is approaching.
